BESTFed,
with two valley locations, is celebrating
World Breastfeeding Week from Sunday,
August 1st to Saturday, August 7th,
2004. This year’s theme is “Exclusive
Breastfeeding: The Gold Standard…Safe,
Sound, Sustainable.” Valley
residents are invited to support the
breastfeeding community. Each BESTFed
location will be hosting a party on
August 7th beginning at 1:00 pm. Refreshments
will be served and entertainment will
be provided. Unity in Motion, a multicultural
performance group, will be our special
guest. Bring your family and friends
and join in the fun! Be sure to enter
your child’s (or children’s)
homemade t-shirt with your favorite
breastfeeding slogan or illustration
in our “Exclusive Breastfeeding
for Exceptional Children” t-shirt
design contest. Answer questions for
our “breastfeeding experience”
contest for a chance to win fun prizes.
BESTFed is excited to show our gratitude
to valley residents who have helped
to keep our private lactation practice
and retail store alive in the Phoenix-
Metro area for the past 10 years.
To show our appreciation, BESTFed
will be offering enormous discounts
on many of our most popular items.
These fun products will include slings,
nursing clothing, pumps, books, pillows,
and more. Every $10 spent at BESTFed
between August 1st and August 7th
at 1:00 pm, entitles customers to
a free raffle ticket to place in a
drawing for a prize of their choice.
Raffle prizes for this special event
were generously donated by local vendors,
such as Bumkins, Little Peanut Products,
Mountain Green, Pediaderm, and TaylorMade
Slings, as well as by national companies
Baby Delight, Maya Wrap Slings, Medela,
Melinda G, and Priv-A-See.
BESTFed opened its doors in July of
1994 as the first full-service private
practice clinic and is now the largest
private practice lactation clinic
in the southwest. It was the first
business in Phoenix with a family-friendly
policy that encourages moms to bring
their non-separating children with
them to work up to the age of 6 years.
BESTFed has recently grown into a
larger space with more consultation
rooms to serve families better. In
addition to private home or office
consultations with International Board
Certified Lactation Consultants, BESTFed
offers the opportunity for mothers
to try breastpumps prior to renting
or purchasing them, support groups
for nursing mothers and babies, the
largest selection of bras in the state,
soft baby carriers, and natural baby
and skin care products. For more information,
please call (480) 820-4424 in the
east valley or (602) 843-4111 in the
west valley.

Falls
Church October 15, 2004
A record number of 2163 lactation
professionals successfully
completed the rigorous requirements
to become International Board
Certified Lactation Consultants
(IBCLC).The final step in
the process was passing a
test administered by the IBLCE
to demonstrate knowledge required
to provide skilled assistance
to nursing mothers.
The
IBLCE Certification is the
professional standard of competency
in the lactation field. It
is the only official, international
credential for those offering
breastfeeding and lactation
care. A combination of basic
training, continuing education,
practice and successful completion
of the examination assures
that the designation “IBCLC”
identifies a member of the
health care team who possesses
specialized skills and knowledge.
There are now approximately
16,500 IBCLCs world-wide.
IBLCE-certified
nurses, physicians, dieticians,
educators, midwives, social
workers, lay counselors, and
therapists work with mothers
to help them excel in the
breastfeeding experience.
A mother who breastfeeds can
save $1400 per year on formula,
is more likely to bond closely
with her child, passes on
immunities to her child and
recovers more quickly from
the weight normally gained
during pregnancy. Her likelihood
of contracting premenopausal
breast cancer or osteoporosis
over her lifetime is reduced.
Studies have shown that babies
who are breastfed have fewer
visits to health care providers
through age 17. The incidence
of otitis media, juvenile
diabetes, and other illnesses
is reduced, not just during
the breastfeeding period but
throughout childhood. Assistance
by an IBLCE-certified professional
in the critical first hour
after birth improves probability
of long term maintenance of
breastfeeding.
IBCLCs
are ideally skilled to help
provide quality breastfeeding
care; develop and implement
breastfeeding protocols; improve
lactation knowledge and skills
of other staff; and to help
their facilities become accredited
under the UNICEF “Baby
Friendly” Hospital Initiative.
Candidates
for the international exam
meet stringent eligibility
requirements that demonstrate
proficiency and understanding
of practical skills, clinical
judgment, current research
knowledge and attainment of
a number of continuing education
credits. The IBLCE maintains
a National/International Registry
for all Registered Lactation
Consultants. The Registry
is a service to the public,
employers and supervisors
to determine if a provider
is a current IBCLC. The Registry
can be accessed through the
IBLCE website at www.iblce.org
and will be updated with the
new IBCLCs on January 2nd,
2005. For more information,
contact the IBLCE at 703-560-7330. |
